My Visit to the New SCAD Museum of Art
If you haven’t visited the SCADmoa yet, I want to urge you to go. There’s a great mix of old and new art mixed with tid-bits of technology.
When first walking in you’ll be greeted with a huge interactive touch screen table. The touch screen includes the look and feel of 21st century technology, and photographs of Savannah from the past, as well as upcoming events and exhibits coming to the museum that you can flip and turn. Not only do you have the table to interact with, but make sure you get a chance to interact with the wall. Yes the giant hot pink wall to your right. Throw on a pair of 3D shades, provided to you at the desk, and get ready to view a plethora of different things going on in that big wall. Warning: the wall will definitely cause you to readjust your eye sight when you take off those glasses.
The first main room you walk into after paying for your ticket has a nice mix of old and new art. I saw one displayed in the Andre LeonTalley exhibit dating back to the 1600s. It was a fitting place to have the painting of the woman wearing a luxurious dress, mixed in with the exhibit displaying gowns from Marc Jacobs, Oscar de le Renta, Vera Wang, and many more.
Another exhibit I checked out was Bill Viola. I went into a VERY dark room, and watched a VERY large screen of a man walking, and then slowing disappearing into a roar of fire surrounding him.
As I left the museum, I did stop into one exhibit of Asian inspired photography. I have to be honest and say out of all the prints in the museum, these were my favorite. Especially a photo done by Rebecca Judy called Red Taxi. It reminded me of the models that architects build to simulate scale only everything participating in the print was real. The people in the print even looked like tiny models used to simulate the scale of the buildings.
I really appreciate that the architects of the museum made it a point to incorporate old with new. They used the old arches from the previous use of the building as arches separating each different room in the main gallery of the museum. As well as using the old Savannah Grey Brick to line the walls in the hallway which included a very large installation stretching from one end of the hall to the other. Need a place to eat your lunch or finish your book? There’s a really nice area outside the museum to sit and relax. You can get to it, not just through the museum, but from MLK Blvd. as well.
I could tell you about every single exhibit I visited at the SCADmoa, but checking it out for yourself would do more justice then what I could do by just a story. So please go check it out!! You can find out more about the new SCADmoa by visiting their facebook fanpage or visiting their website.
