Pet Friendly Savannah
First off, if you’re not from Savannah and are looking for a place to stay, the La Quinta Inn I-95 West Savannah, La Quinta Midtown Savannah and the Red Roof Inn & Suites have no pet fees and no restrictions on pet size. No matter what the size or breed, your pet can stay for free. (reference 1)
Looking for a good place to take your pet for a walk? Savannah does have a leash law that requires your pet to be on a leash at all times and that you “clean up” after your pet does the deed. Great places to walk your pet include Forsyth Park, which is filled with great views for you including a gorgeous fountain and oak trees, and Fort Pulaski National Monument. (reference 2) Also, there is Old Fort Jackson, the oldest standing fort in Georgia. Not only can you both stretch your legs and enjoy the beautiful spring Savannah weather, but you can enjoy learning about and seeing Savannah’s history. Finally, take your pet down to Troup Square also known as “Dog Bone Square” for its elaborate pet-friendly fountain for dogs. (reference 2)
Just because you have your pet with you, doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy Savannah’s fine shopping areas. Satchel on Broughton, which carries mostly fine leather purses and accessories, is the home of BG, a Chesapeake-chocolate lab mix who is very friendly. Owner Elizabeth Seeger is very open to pets visiting and has dog treats and water bowls for them. (reference 3) La Paperie, downtown on Whitaker Street, welcomes dogs while you shop for your fine paper and stationary. Urban Cargo, located on Bull Street, sells gifts, postcards and small items and is the home of Frankie the cat and Maggie the dog; they welcome you to bring your pet for a visit. (reference 3) River Street is also a great place to take your pet shopping, many shops will allow your pet in if it’s well behaved and there are plenty of places to sit and tie your pet while you wait for family and friends to shop.
If you get a rumbling in your tummy while spending your time in Savannah, there are plenty of places to eat that have outside seating to accommodate you and your pet. Cafe Gelatohhhh!, Belford’s and Tortuga's Island Grille all have outside seating where your pet is more then welcome to relax while you and your friends and family dine together. (reference 2) The Mellow Mushroom has baked-to-order pizza and outdoor seating for you and your pet. Café Ambrosia offers an array of baked goods, teas and lunches and even provides dog treats and water for your pet while you dine. (reference 3)
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Leopold’s Ice Cream also has outside seating so you can enjoy a cool ice cream on a warm Savannah day. If you have a small pet that can be carried, Savannah Candy Kitchen welcomes you to tour the store with your pet and satisfy that need for sugar. Smooth serves many different flavors of smoothies and offers Wi-Fi, which allows you to enjoy a tasty treat and work online. They also provide water for your better half so they can enjoy themselves too. (reference 3) Gallery Expresso, for the coffee lovers, also has outside seating. (Reference 2)
Interested in a tour to get to know Savannah a little better? Well your pet is welcome to come for that too! Plantation Carriage Company and Old Savannah Tours, Inc. allow small pets that can sit in your lap while touring, so both of you can enjoy the beautiful Savannah weather and learn more about the city. If you’re interested in learning about movies that have been shot in Savannah, you can bring your dog along as long as they are on a leash and you remember to “clean up” after them. Savannah is a great place to visit. Its history is rich and its area is beautiful.
