Top FREE Things to Do In Savannah

1. Forsyth Park - Almost painfully obvious to anyone who lives in the area, Forsyth Park is the best venue to start looking for all things that are free. Savannah's first and largest recreational park, you can go there for a picnic, a stroll, play some tennis, or head to the basketball courts and bounce off some steam. Test out your photography skills by taking photos of the famous landmarking fountain at the north end of the park, or let your children cool off in the hot summer sun at the fountain near the amphitheatre. And while we're talking about the amphitheatre, there are concerts & festivals held there practically year round. Just last week was the annual Jazz Festival, and many more are to come.
2. Ellis Square - Speaking of fountains, your kids will love the one at Ellis Square that features huge spouts for them to run through. At night, it lights up in various colors making the splashing even more fun.
3. City Market - In the same area as Ellis Square is City Market, a great place to check out quaint little shops, art galleries, or sit and listen to a live local band striking up some soulful chords in the center of the market.
4. Tybee Island's Beach - Ok so, this activity isn't completely free, the parking is $1.50 per hour, $3.00 minimum if you use a credit or debit card. However, that's just between 8AM-8PM. If you're an early bird, head to the beach for the sunrise. Or, head to the beach right at 8PM for a just after sunset late dinner picnic. I don't know about you, but I've been night beachin' plenty o' time, and it's fun to just pull out a blanket, lay back, watch the stars, and listen to the gentle ocean waves.
5. Sentient Bean - The Sentient Bean, across the street from the free parking lot at Forsyth Park's tennis courts, has weekly, eclectic comedy shows, concerts, poetry readings, and more that the hipster in you can get into. A frequent Savannah College of Art & Design student hangout, it's the place to be to read a book, people watch, or work on a project around people vs. at home alone. You don't even have to buy anything to use their free wireless internet. Free wireless internet - now there's another good reason to stop by.
6. Savannah College of Art & Design - Savannah College of Art & Design itself has some pretty cool free stuff going on too, like a daily free bus tour of the campus, free exhibitions, and annual free concerts and summer movies at Forsyth Park. SCAD brings several free events to Savannah and this short summary really doesn't do it justice! Be sure to check out their events calendar for more awesomeness.
7. First Friday Fireworks on the River - The 1st Friday of each month, Savannah celebrates with a beautiful fireworks extravaganza and you can enjoy the perfect view from River Street. This is one that people mentioned a few times when we asked what everyone's favorite FREE thing to do in Savannah was on our Facebook fanpage.
8. Cathedral of St. John the Baptist - Here's one I didn't know about: One of our Facebook members gave us this cool tip - you can visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and even take photos there, for free. Now there's an awesome touristy thing to do that I, being an avid photographer on the side, am gonna have to take advantage of really soon. Georgia's Oldest Catholic Gothic Revival Church, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was dedicated in 1876 and features stained glass windows as well as gold leafing. It's a pretty noticeable landmark here in Savannah; besides the Talmudge Bridge, the steeple just might make it the tallest structure here.
