Amazing, Inspiring Food Documentary JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI (2012, USA/Japan)
What:
This Film Screens 3 Times - at 2pm, 5pm & 8pm
The Psychotronic Film Society of Savannah continues its Summer Series of "Movies Savannah Missed" with a special, one-day-only engagement of a movie that is being called "One of the greatest films about the art of food ever made" and "One of the finest documentaries of any kind in many years," Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
This rare chance to see this brand-new release on the big screen (it's only showing in a few handfuls of theaters around the country) is made possible by generous sponsorship from our friends at Connect Savannah, The Book Lady Bookstore & Wi-Fi Cafe, Angel's BBQ, Five Points Beverage, and Lulu's Chocolate Bar.
** In fact, if you show your ticket stub for JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI the day of the screening at Lulu's Chocolate Bar (they're open till midnight), they'll give you a discount on your bill. So head over there for drinks and/or dessert afterwards and let them know you appreciate their support of the PFS very much!
THE PLOT
This quiet and visually sumptious documentary on 86-year-old Jiro Ono (The Greatest Master Sushi Chef in The World) and his inauspicious 10-seat Tokyo restaurant (it's in a subway station and folks literally make reservations 4 months in advance to eat there) which is the first restaurant of its kind to be awarded a coveted 3-Star Michelin Review.
For most of his life, Jiro has been mastering the art of making sushi, but even at his age he sees himself still striving for perfection, working from sunrise to well beyond sunset to taste every piece of fish; meticulously train his employees; and carefully mold and finesse the impeccable presentation of each sushi creation. At the heart of this story is Jiro’s relationship with his eldest son Yoshikazu, the worthy heir to Jiro’s legacy, who is unable to live up to his full potential in his father’s shadow.
