Malcolm McDowell B-Day Tribute: Lost Drama Assassin of the Tsar (1991, Russia)
What:
The Psychotronic Film Society of Savannah celebrates the 69th Birthday of the esteemed Psychotronic stage, screen and television actor Malcolm McDowell (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, O LUCKY MAN, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS), with an extremely rare public showing of this peculiar and haunting film which Malcolm himself considers one of his finest onscreen performances - and one which he regrets most of his fans are completely unaware of.
Unfortunately, it seems that financial problems prevented the film from actually being distributed after its completion. As a result, it has never been released on video in most countries of the world and has hardly ever been shown publicly outside of Russia.
The Plot
Based on actual historic events, but with a strange twist - a patient in a modern day mental institution (McDowell) believes that he is the man who assassinated Russia's Tsar Alexander in 1881 and Tsar Nicolas II in 1918. He and his doctor soon mysteriously slip out of reality and are forced to relive the events of 1918 in order to break the eerie spell.
ASSASSIN OF THE TSAR has never been released on DVD anywhere in the Western world, so don't miss your chance to catch this criminally unknown piece of ambitious foreign cinema as it was meant to be seen - on the Big Screen!
