If you're not used to forests of live oak, pine, and palm, the forest hikes here will mesmerize. These trails will also introduce you to some of the history of the park, with the shell middens from Native Americans, earthworks from the Civil War, and liquor still sites from the 1930's prohibition. Big Ferry Trail Loop is the longest in the park, at 3 miles (4.8 km), but there is a shortened 2 mile (3.2 km) loop. This forested trail leads to an observation tower overlooking the marshy salt flats, so bring binoculars. If taking the longer hike, there is also a shell midden (or mound), a liquor still, and a Confederate earthworks. Both foot traffic and bicycles are welcome on this path. The popular Sandpiper Trail is a 1 mile (1.6 km) accessible loop. It traverses several habitats, including maritime forests on hammocks, tidal creeks, and salt flats. This trail also features an earthworks and a liquor still site. Boardwalks will take you across marshy lands. The Avian Loop Trail is a 1 mile (1.6 km) loop that is only accessed via other trails. This pathway leads to the Intracoastal Waterway, Skidaway Narrows, a good birding site. The trail can be reached from the back end of the Sandpiper Trail Loop, or via the 1 mile (1.6 km) Connector Trail leading from the Big Ferry Trail. On your visit to Skidaway Island State Park, take some time to stop at the interpretive center, next to the picnic area. They have nature exhibits and offer programs for all ages.
